Rules of Subsistence:

  1. Respect - Respect others just as you would like to be respected. This is the fundamental rule for being a human; treat others as you would like to be treated. This is the most important rule of Subsistence.
    • Be tolerant of others - Other people may be different from you. You will never be forced to be their friend, but you must at least be civil towards them.
    • Do not be racist - Racism will not be tolerated at all. If this is observed, you will be thrown into the Correctional Facility without warning. Repeat offenders will be banned.
    • Avoid blatantly bashing opinions - You may disagree with someone, but please try to be kind if you'd like to express your own views on something.
  2. Good manners - This simply means to being pleasant to be around. Some things you should remember regarding good manners:
    • Avoid flaming - flaming is arguing or saying bad things about other people. Flaming can happen on purpose or on accident, but should be avoided. Think about rule number one before saying bad things about people.
    • Avoid trolling - trolling is starting discussions or posting topics with the intent to get people to argue with each other, and take sides against each other.
    • Avoid spamming - spamming is posting senseless comments on a forum, or just saying things that really aren't meaningful and totally irrelevant. Spamming is annoying to everyone and really easy to avoid. It just requires some self control.
  3. Activity - We ask for some activity from all of our members.
    • In RuneScape - We ask for all of our members who hold the rank of Clan Member or any Senior Member status to simply play RuneScape from time to time. It should be noted though, that we do not require any event activity. We believe events should never be forced, as they are supposed to be fun and enjoyable. Only RuneScape activity is asked for. However, if someone retires from RuneScape, we encourage them not to leave the clan. Instead, all that they have to do is ask for the rank of Emeritus. This allows them to honorably stay in the clan, without having to play RuneScape. The only difference between a person that holds the rank of Clan Member and a person that holds the rank of Emeritus is eligibility for Leadership positions. We ask that all of our Leaders be active in the game. However, Assistant Leaders, who are appointed by Leaders, not elected by the clan, can hold the rank of Emeritus if the Leader feels that the person is adequate.
    • On the forums - We ask for all of our members to be active on the forums. A preferred amount would be once a week, but this is a loose requirement. To anyone going away for an extended period, a post should simply be made signifying that this will happen.
    • In the IRC chatroom - We also ask for our members to use the IRC chatroom. An explanation of this can be found in this topic. We believe that IRC is one of the best ways to bring a clan together, as it allows for many people to bond with each other and make new friends.
  4. Signatures & Avatars - Any images involved in signatures and avatars must be appropriate for all ages. This means nothing sexually explicit, extremely gory, etc.
    • Avatars can be no bigger than 120px in width and 120px in height. Images uploaded from your computer can be no bigger than 50kb in size.
    • Signature images have no restrictions, however, anything that is too long will be removed at the moderator's digression.
  5. Advertising - you may not advertise other clans on our forums.
    • Clans and sites that we do advertise are listed at the top of our forum in the Affiliates bar. These sites meet affiliation specifications and are approved the the Subsistence admins.
    • You may not have material in your posts, profile, or signature that links to other clan sites.

Just a heads up to new members: Do not be intimidated if you have different views with others. Feel free to throw in your opinion, but try not to let the the other person(s) feel attacked. Admins will not ban you for expressing your opinion; in fact, it is encouraged.

Consequences for breaking rules:

Consequences for breaking the rules will vary from incident to incident. Infringement of the rules will usually result first in verbal warnings and then the consequences will move up slowly in severity, the worst being shameful discharge from the clan followed by a permanent ban. For breaking something like basic good manners, the punishment may vary from Leader to Leader. For example, if someone is spamming in the chatroom, they will not be punished on the forums, and only receive a kick from the chatroom, or a short ban. However, if spamming in the chatroom is repeatedly a problem, they may spend some time in the Correctional Facility (the only forum one will be able to see after committing a serious offense).

Infringement of rule number three, the activity requirement (not using either the forums or IRC for very long periods), will result in being placed in the Inactive rank, where one receives limited forum access and is also ineligible to run for Leadership positions. However, one should remember that if one only retires from RuneScape, but is willing to still be active in the IRC chatroom and on the forums, they will be placed in the Emeritus rank, which holds all of the benefits of a regular member with the exception of being able to run for Leadership positions. In contrast, the Inactive rank is much more limited than the Emeritus rank. Ultimately, if one is in the Inactive rank for an extremely long time, they may end up getting pruned (deleted) from the clan. Reapplying at a later time will automatically restore one's position to the rank of Clan Member. We do not believe in permanently striking down someone's record just because they go through an inactive period.
