So, the purpose of this post is quite frankly out of boredom. I can't sleep and I need a way to try and clear my mind, and having a bit of free-writing can usually do the trick. Also, I am really excited to be the new Director of Events, and I don't really know how many people in the clan know me all that well. So, in this topic, I'm just going to kind of reintroduce myself to the clan in a biographic style.
First off, my name is Sam. I live in a small town just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 'Merica, and I'm 18. I'm planning to attend a small liberal arts college in my area in the fall to pursue an undergraduate degree in Physics with a minor in Education, with the intent to either become a high school science teacher or to work through graduate school and obtain a PhD in Theoretical Physics, with which I would then teach at the collegiate level and perform research. I can't wait to see if I manage to stick with that major or if it will change by my Sophomore year, which happens to so many people. Other than that, I just earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America, I am classified as an honors student in my high school, I work as a store associate at OfficeMax, and I have a passion for music, specifically singing. I do consider my self an ameatur gamer, and, besides Runescape, I play a lot of different steam games, such as Killing Floor, Civilization 5, and Realm of the Mad God, and I am also an avid Minecraft fan. Below, I will go a bit more in depth into each detail above just for kicks.
Physics? Who in the world would like that?
Spoiler
I would haha. Ever since I was young, I always have wanted to find out why things are the way they are. I would deconstruct and reconstruct mechanical pencils like it was my job, but I would always wonder about the bigger picture even more, with things like gravity, sound, astronomy, and so on. I also really enjoy logic and reasoning, and trying to put down a solid idea of how things work. I like to challenge myself as well, with the sciences requiring a lot of critical thinking and advanced math skills. Along with this, I also found myself with the ability to relay information to others pretty well, which lead me to desire a career in education. Sharing your knowledge with someone else in a way that they can understand it just as well if not better than you do is probably one of the most rewarding experiences for me. This is why it was an obvious choice for me to want to become a physics teacher. Teaching high school would be very enjoyable, and no they don't have the greatest salary, but it's something that I would like to do. Still, I want to keep my options open, which is why I'm also thinking about continuing my education after undergraduate school and possibly teaching as a college professor. My research interest would be a very new branch of Psychophysics, that is attempting to analyze the interaction between the mind (brain waves) and the outside world. Could telepathy be already biologically encoded in us and we just don't know how to harness it yet? Why I say this is a new field is because it is starting to be analyzed in new ways, such as looking for changes in temperature of an object that is being consciously focused on by a person. It's pretty out there but hey, physicists now think that gravity is due to the curvature of the space-time continuum, so meh.
My Scouting Experience
Spoiler
Being a scout has actually been the most rewarding experience of my life so far. I was pretty much an outcast in grade-school and scouts provided me with that friendship and satisfied the need of belonging to something that I did not otherwise have. I stuck with it, completed cubs, and now made it to Eagle. It has been a long journey, somewhat challenging, but it has made me so many friends, taken me to numerous, diverse places (such as Canadia), and given me a great head start in life, with opportunities literally knocking at my door. My project was to build three, ten-foot-long picnic tables from scratch for a local baseball field, and they turned out great. If anyone is a Scout or just wants to talk about the experience, I'd be happy to.
Scholarship/Education
Spoiler
This year, my senior year, I really wanted to test my limits. I took three Advanced Placement courses, Literature and Composition, Psychology, and Physics, as well as chorus, precalculous, and journalism. The workload wasn't bad, but it is very teacher-dependent, so I don't recommend it for everyone in every school. I like to call myself an "education buff" because, while my niche is science, I also find math, history, social studies, and language very interesting. I am also a big advocate for the arts, which I will talk more in depth about later. A well rounded education is something that I think is very important in a world that is constantly changing, because you never know what situation you may end up in. I ended up with an overall high school gpa of 3.79 and I am 15/101 in my class.
My First Real Job
Spoiler
Not much to say here, other than OfficeMax is a great office supply store and I love working there. My coworkers are cool, it's a very relaxed atmosphere, and it's not awful pay for a high school student.
Music
Spoiler
If I had to declare my true passion in life, it would be music. Singing is awesome and I am blessed with a bit of talent in that area as well. Self expression is an extremely important part of person growth to me, and finding that art, whether it be with music, painting/drawing, architecture, media, anything, finding that medium of expression and that passion is super important. I sang in three competitve choirs in these past two years, and I participated in my school district's musical for the past nine years, with leads in popular shows such as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beastand Mr Bumble in Oliver! Outside of the realm of acting and singing, I mainly listen to rock or alternative music with a little bit of pop occasionally. My favorite band of all time is called "Alter Bridge" and I plan to write a rock-opera using their music. I'm dead serious.
Minecraft
Spoiler
I don't know exactly why I enjoy Minecraft so much, but I really do. I love mods, I love vanilla, I love creative, I love survival, I love rpg, I love minigames, I love Minecraft. Yay.
As far as clan background, my first account was created in 2009 and MiniBandGeek coerced me into creating it. It's name was Sirmasonking and I went horribly inactive. I rejoined with this account on February 11th, 2010, under the name Absaloin. I joined the Recruitment Team, made it to Senior Member status, and then was selected to be the Assistant Director of Membership Management by a player named Ser Germain (it used to be that Directors picked their assistants). He had medical issues, and so for a few months I was acting Director of Membership Management, which was a cool experience. By now it's 2011 and Germ had to be removed for inactivity and another player chose a different assistant over me. I then participated in the different projects going on in SST, such as the radio, newspaper, and yearbook, which I would kind of like to see come back eventually . I then single-handedly (jk) persuaded Christian to create the Director of Programs position to help with every project's needs in the clan. I soon became the DoP and held that position for 4 to 5 months before having to step down due to dwindling time availability. By the end of 2012, all of the projects were cancelled. After that, I helped start a clan Minecraft server, and was a proponent for the change to a Gaming Community as opposed to just a Runescape clan. Then, we figured out that it was a bit more than we could handle and we needed to focus on Runescape still. I still host a Minecraft server now (but it's currently in a state of flux ) and it's great. From then on, I was just a Senior member, helping out where I could.
And now, I am the Director of Events for the clan. I'm pretty excited to be in Leadership once again and hope that I can help the clan grow to what it really could be. If you have any requests or suggestions for me, let me know! I'm happy to hear from anyone. That goes for issues as well, I have no problem with helping anyone here out. Much like scouting, Subsistence has become a part of me over these past four years, and I can't really see an end to it coming soon. Thanks for reading!
